by Diana Willment

Dandelion Publications, 2009, ISBN 978-0-9540590-5-7

Marking the 150th anniversary of the opening of Great Western Railway's dock at Brentford in 1859 and the railway line which linked it with the main line at Southall, Diana Willment's book provides an account of the planning and construction of the dock and its railway, their useful life over the next hundred years, and their eventual closure in 1965.   Extensively illustrated with maps, plans, a wide range of engravings and photographs, the book includes much fascinating detail of the construction of the railway and dock, and of the warehouses, cranes and the hydraulic equipment that powered them.  Details of the cargoes carried, coupled with some recollections of a man who worked as a shunter, give a picture of the working dock at different periods in its life.
